Before the session and after it

These are the sheets we print and hand out in the clinic. Read them before your appointment and keep them afterwards — most of the complications we see come from ignoring one line on one of these lists.

  • Eat a light meal two hours before, unless you have been asked to fast
  • Tell us about any blood thinner at least seven days ahead
  • Bring an adult with you if the sedation is intravenous
  • Avoid smoking for twenty-four hours beforehand
  • Bite on the gauze for half an hour without changing it
  • Cold pack twenty minutes on, twenty off, for the first six hours
  • Do not rinse or spit on the first day
  • Cold, soft food — and no straws at all
  • No coffee, tea or coloured sauces for forty-eight hours
  • Use a sensitive toothpaste for a week
  • Do not smoke for the first two days
  • Mild sensitivity is normal and passes within two days
  • Brush after every meal with the orthodontic brush
  • Avoid nuts, ice and anything sticky
  • Use the wax on any bracket that rubs your cheek
  • Do not put off an adjustment by more than a week
