It is not reading. Here are the six things primary teachers actually ask us about.
Every year we ask the primary schools our children move on to what they wish incoming pupils could do. Reading has never once been at the top of the list.
What they ask for: can the child follow a two-step instruction; can they wait without an adult managing them; can they say when something is wrong; can they open their own lunch; can they lose a game; can they return to a task after being interrupted.
All six are learnable, none of them need a worksheet, and all of them are quietly on our timetable every single day.
