Why the Little Makers Studio uses real hand drills, and how we introduce them.
A blunt tool is more dangerous than a sharp one, because it slips. It is also insulting: a child can tell when they have been given a toy version of a real thing.
So the studio has real hand drills, real clay wire, real needles. Week one is nothing but induction — how to carry it, where to set it down, what we do if it falls. Children take that seriously in a way adults rarely expect, because for once the seriousness is earned.
In four years we have had three small cuts and no serious injury. We have also had a hundred children who know how to concentrate with something sharp in their hand, which is a form of confidence you cannot teach on paper.
