Announcements keep framing solid-state batteries as an automotive story. Manufacturing reality points somewhere quieter: hearing aids, watches, medical implants and industrial sensors.

Yield decides the market

A cell process with 70% yield is a disaster in a 100 kWh pack and completely acceptable in a 40 mWh one. Small formats let the technology earn revenue while the process matures.

Energy density is not even the main draw in these categories. Thermal tolerance and a flat discharge curve matter more, and solid electrolytes are genuinely better at both.

Automotive will come. It will come after three or four years of small-format volume pays for the equipment.
